Chapter 24

Military helicopters surrounded Remedium HQ, a perimeter locking the area down multiple blocks out. Vanessa collected the light diffusers from the pile of Doctor Doppelgängers goop, wiping them clean before Xara took them for herself.

I looked over the side of the skyscraper, watching over the city I’d been trying so hard to keep safe, and disgusted with the fact that we’d been playing into Seth’s hands.

Part of me doubted he actually was dead.

Another trick perhaps.

After all, I didn’t see a body, only spatter.

Every Malefactor we ‘tracked’ had been created by him to keep us running on a hamster wheel. I wished he wasn’t gone just so I could make him answer for all of it…and possibly kill him myself.

Although I had never killed another human being—clones and Malefactors notwithstanding—I didn’t have any specific rule against it.

I just did what I believed was right.

My mistake was believing everyone had the same intentions I did.

No more.

The only people I could trust were the Vanguard, everyone else was suspect. I realized the danger of an ‘us vs them’ mentality, but with the changes the world was going through, it was the only one I had left.

With Seth gone, there was no more Command Cluster, no more Remedium, and nobody trying to give us orders. I felt Dawn put her hand on my right shoulder, stepping next to me with a reassuring expression.

“Hey,” she said softly. “Are you okay?”

I nodded. “My strength is back. And you?”

“Tip top shape.”

With an acknowledging but subdued smile, I glanced to my left where Casey and Ivy were geeking out with Vanessa about how she beat the clone so bad he self-destructed.

A little chuckle escaped my throat, then I turned back to Dawn. “She’ll make a great addition to the team, especially since she’s immune to drain radiation now.”

“As the leader of the Vanguard, I’ll be the judge of that,” Dawn said with playful sass before bending sideways to look around me at the girls. “And yeah, I think she’ll kick ass. We should probably give her some boxing classes though.”

“Or we can just have her kick everything in the balls,” I retorted.

Dawn giggled at me, then looked back out toward the perimeter of Apache helicopters all facing us. The firefighting crew had their work cut out for them.

Luckily for us, the attack happened so quickly that the foundations were intact. No deliberate demolition that day. Hopefully.

“I’m pretty sure our direct deposit is going to stop after this,” said Dawn. “What are we going to do for money?”

“We’ll figure it out,” I said. “Most of my stuff was expensed, so I’ve got some money saved up.”

“Me too,” Dawn replied.

“We’ll probably all need to move, or that asshole’s gonna find us.”

“You don’t usually curse like that.”

“I’m not usually this mad.”

Dawn took my hand with both of hers, caressing the top of it with her thumbs. “As long as we’re together, we can protect each other. I’ll talk to the girls, maybe we can think about buying a house…you know…for safety in numbers.
